How to animate old family photos with AI

An old photo of your grandparents can become a short video where the person in it moves again, in about a minute. Here is which photo to pick, how to get it from paper into your phone, and what to do when the result misses.

What actually happens to the photo

You upload one old photo and about a minute later you have a short video where the person in it moves. Not on a loop and not in a jerky way: a small turn of the head, a blink, a hint of a smile. It runs a few seconds and you can send it to the family group chat like any other clip.

It is not a filter and not a 3D effect. The AI finds the face, predicts how it would have moved and fills in the motion between frames. That is exactly why the source photo matters so much.

In practice: pick the photo on your phone, pay $2.99 once, and the video usually arrives in 30 to 60 seconds. You can close the page - the link stays live and we email it to you as well. No account, no subscription.

You can try it right away. Uploading takes one tap and you see the price before you confirm anything.

Which photo from the family archive to pick

Most disappointment comes from a weak original. Before you upload anything, run through this list. A photo does not have to tick every box, but the first three matter.

    • The face fills at least a third of the frame height. If it is the size of a fingernail, there is nothing to build the motion from.
    • The eyes are visible. Closed eyes, heavy glare on glasses or a face shaded by a hat brim all cause trouble.
    • The person looks into the lens, or at most slightly to the side.
    • The face itself is sharp. The rest of the photo can be blurry, that is fine.
    • The photo is not blown out to white, and not so dark that you cannot make anything out.

Got a group photo but want to animate your grandmother? Crop it. Your phone's gallery and its edit tool are enough. From a photo with fifteen people round a table, keep one to three faces. The difference in the result is huge.

    Will it handle a hundred-year-old black-and-white print?

Yes, and those often give the best results, because old portraits were shot close up with the sitter looking straight into the lens. Before the animation the photo goes through an enhancement pass: contrast is balanced, facial detail is restored and the orientation is corrected so the video does not start upside down.

Where it gets tricky, and what to do about it:

Photo typeTypical resultWhat to do first
Studio black-and-white portraitVery goodNothing, as long as the eyes show
Faded colour print from the 1980sVery goodShoot it without glare or shadow
Photo behind glass in a frameDepends on the glareTake it out of the frame
Passport or ID photoGoodCrop to the face
Group photo, ten people or moreWeakCrop to one to three faces
A photographed screen or Facebook screenshotWeakTrack down the original file

And if the result misses? There is a rating right under the video. Give it one or two stars, say what went wrong, and we generate one new version free of charge. You do not pay twice.

What to do with the finished video

You get a plain MP4 file with no watermark, so you can do anything with it. The four most common uses:

    1. 1
Send it to the family chat
WhatsApp, Messenger, email. The clip is short and light, so it plays instantly even on an older phone.
    2. 2
Play it for grandparents on a tablet
Better in person and with a short word first than out of the blue. Seeing your own mother's face move again carries weight.
    3. 3
Use it at a memorial gathering
Project the clip, or turn it into a card with a link and print the QR code on the order of service.
    4. 4
Turn it into a greeting card
Add your own message and you get a link you can send to anyone. Nothing to install, it opens in the browser.

The photo and the video stay at your link until you delete them yourself. Deleting is one click next to the result, and it cannot be undone.
