Animate photos with AI: turn your family archive into living video

A shoebox of old family prints can become short clips where your relatives move again, in about a minute each. Here is the full process, plus what works and what does not.

What it means to animate a photo with AI

Animating a photo means turning one still image into a short video where the face, eyes and head move naturally, as if the photographer had pressed the shutter a second later.

It is not a filter or a parallax effect. The AI tracks dozens of facial landmarks and predicts real motion. The clip runs about three seconds and works even on photos taken a century ago.

You can do the whole thing from your phone in under a minute on the Alive Photo home page. No account, no subscription, one single payment.

How to choose the right photo

After thousands of uploads, one pattern is clear: the source photo decides the result. Look for images that tick these boxes:

    • The face fills at least a third of the frame height. Distant group shots animate worst.
    • Eyes are open and visible, ideally with no glare on glasses.
    • The face looks into the lens or at most a three-quarter profile.
    • The face itself is sharp. The rest of the photo can be blurry, that is fine.
    • The photo is neither blown out nor almost black.

    Black-and-white, faded and damaged photos

The most common question we get is whether it works on a hundred-year-old black-and-white portrait. It does, and those often produce the most moving results. Before animating, we enhance the frame automatically: balance the contrast, restore facial detail and fix the orientation.

If the result misses, rate it right under the video and we regenerate it for you. You do not pay twice.

What to do with the finished video

You get a clean MP4 file with no watermark. The most common uses:

    1. 1
Send it to the family chat
WhatsApp, Messenger or email. The video is optimised for phones, so it plays instantly.
    2. 2
Play it for grandparents on a tablet
The strongest reactions come when someone sees their own mother or father move again.
    3. 3
Use it at a memorial gathering
A short animation on a projector, or a QR code on a card that opens the video on any phone.
    4. 4
      Turn it into a card
Build a greeting from the video with your own message and a link you can send to anyone.
